It seems like every week, there is a new study or journal article highlighting the connection between sleep and human health. Last week it was an article in the New York Times - based on a study that was recently published in Nature Communications - which reported that when people sleep too little (less than six hours per night) in their 50’s and 60’s, they are more likely to develop dementia as seniors.
It’s true that lack of sleep is linked to dementia, but that’s not the only health risk that scientists believe is increased by poor sleep health. Studies have shown a link between lack of sleep and increased risk of type 2 diabetes, heart attacks, injury, obesity, and depression.
Sleep is critical to mental and physical health, and yet 1 in 3 adults do not get a healthy amount of sleep according to the Center for Disease Control, and poor sleep is even more common in older adults and high school students. And when you ask people whether they are happy with their sleep, only 49% of adults say they are satisfied with the amount and quality of sleep they get. Poor sleep is a health epidemic. Helping people to sleep better is surely one of the best ways to improve the lives of our customers and to address some of the most urgent public health problems.
Sleep is fundamentally a brain process, and StimScience is focused on helping people improve their sleep at a neurological level. Our years of research into the neuroscience of sleep gives us a unique insight into how an in-home, consumer-friendly device can directly help the brain to achieve a naturally longer, higher-quality night’s sleep. That’s why we are making a sleep device - our team of neuroscientists and inventors is well-positioned to help solve the sleep epidemic.
